Yesterday evening I found myself in the shopping center across the street from the Daiso with an hour to kill (long story). Oh, what hardship!
I was restrained. I only spent about $5. I bought some erasers (which I actually needed) and a maneki neko (I could use some luck) and a wind bell. I'm moving in a couple of weeks. You should always have something new for a new place, right?
Anyway, these ridiculously adorable pet beds were one of the few items more than $1.50 ($15). If Daiso still has them when I move, I'm definately getting one for Junebug. They'd be too small for any but the smallest breeds of dog, but it's the perfect size for her. And the new place has a hardwood floor, which she's never been very comfortable on, so this will give her a place to get off it when she's out of the cage. The bottom cushion comes out and is machine-washable, too.
I think I would be considerably less outraged at the state of the world in general, if I had an adorable mechanical penguin teabag-dipper.
I haven't bought anything totally frivolous in a while; for some reason such purchases always cheer me up considerably. Luckily I don't often need cheering, or I would live in a sea of cheap gewgaws and be even poorer than I am now.
In other news, I really need to start writing haiku and taking photographs again. I haven't had a lot of spare time since the whole bike-riding adventure began, since large parts of my day are spent just trying to get from Point A to Point B. I need to carve out a little time each day and set it aside for just that. And I need to start going to parks and cemeteries again, like I was doing earlier this spring. Going to places other than home-work-places where I run errands-home again really stimulates me mentally.
I haven't had any recipes lately because I've been eating my way through a boatload of cabbage soup, which I already posted the recipe for. One head of cabbage makes a lot of soup, but I'm not going to throw out half a perfectly good head of cabbage just to switch things up, you know? Anyway, I like cabbage soup, I'll happily eat it every night for a week and a half.
I didn't have time last weekend to work on cross stitch, because every waking moment was devoted to Harry Potter. I did manage to get some done this weekend but neglected to take a picture. I'll probably finish the Bonsai & Buddha next weekend, then I need to start on something new. I also really want to start working on a scrapbook for all the cemeteries I've been to this year. And I've been thinking of getting into letterboxing--I know Coyote Hills has at least 3 or 4 boxes and would be an easy place to start. Lately I've just really felt the need to do something creative. My brain feels kind of dried-up and blah.
This is awesome: this company makes woman's blouses with old-fashioned embroidery, but nestled within every design is a dirty slogan. Sweetly subversive!
(And I linked to the Boing Boing post, because the company's site seems to be down temporarily. I hope because they're getting lots of business from the BB post!)
I've known about Tumbleweed Tiny Houses for a while but I saw them mentioned on BoingBoing.net today. I love them--they're the anti-Mcmansion. In a lot of places you don't even need a permit to live in one, because they take up less than 100 sq. feet.
I would totally live in of these. I practically live in one already--I rent a mother-in-law cottage and it's essentially one room and a tiny bathroom. I'm perfectly at ease living in a small space. I shower in a closet, cook in a toaster oven, and sleep on a futon mat on the floor. The only thing that really takes up space are my books!
<----- The Vardo design is adorable, but practically I think it's just a little too small to actually live in. And it doesn't have a bathroom. But the Epu or the Z. Glass House--I would live in one of those. They both have kitchens, bathrooms, and water heaters, and the latter one even has a fireplace!
<----- Wall-mounted tubular fruit bowl.
I came across a list of the entries for an Italian design firm's contest, "Ceramics for Breakfast". That's the winning entry, but there are some equally (if not more so) interesting entries.
I like the ghostie salt & pepper shakers!
Thanks to my pal Emma for sending me this link: Rebound Designs.
These are awesome! But $120 is a little pricey for a purse, and I bet I could make one myself for like 1/10 of the price. I just need to find a suitable old hardcover book, because I don't think I'd want to gut any of mine. Although I do have an old leatherbound edition of The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe that is already falling apart...
I'm taking a personal day on Monday, I think I'll hit up some secondhand bookstores and fabric stores. I know where I can get some purse handles like that, too. It's just a matter of finding a book that will work, some fabric that goes with it, probably something to reinforce the bottom, and using a hot glue gun to assemble it. I'm not sure how the handles are attached, but I'll figure something out, I'm sure.
Does anyone in my 'hood have experience with SilverJewelryClub.com? It's a website that has daily (sometimes hourly) offers of free (except for a $5.99 shipping & handling charge) sterling silver jewelry.
It's been around for a while and seems legit; I'm just a naturally skeptical person. It seems too good to be true. My main worry is that it's not solid silver, but plated. I'm hard on my jewelry and would wear off plating in a few months. And I can't wear plated earrings, they make my piercings get all oozy and gross.
The stuff looks nice, although I'm guessing the pieces aren't large. I was surprised that they use stones like amethysts and topaz in promotional give-aways--okay, they aren't pigeonblood rubies or anything, but they also aren't stones that you would find just lying around on the ground.
Futurama action figures will soon be here! Fry looks a little weird--I think his face is just a shade too narrow and long--but Zoidberg looks awesome.
They'll be released in 3 pairs, and what's really neat is that each pair will come with a seperate piece of the Robot Devil. So when you've bought all 3 pairs, you have an extra figure! That's a really clever way to make people buy all 3, while also giving them something extra.
