i hated pink when i was a little girl. just sayin'.
I saw this commercial last night while I was watching Prison Break. I'd read about it at nearly every feminist website I read, but somehow actually seeing it was so much worse.
To sum up: Playskool's "Rose Petal Cottage" (a playhouse marketed to girls) is "a place where her dreams have room to grow!"--so long as those dreams don't extend beyond a lifetime of childbearing and domestic drudgery. I think the line that really pisses me off is the one about "entertaining her imagination" over a shot of the little girl pretending to do laundy. Yes, getting my sheets sparkling white was totally the pinnacle of my fevered 7-year-old daydreams. Was this thing designed by Mormons?
You know, I probably would have liked this when I was a little girl... but I would have tossed the cradle and baby into the trash, colored the walls with markers, and pretended it was a spaceship or something. (I used to pretend my bedroom was a spaceship and the rest of the house just a larger structure I was temporarily docked with. Being totally alone in a self-sufficient little place was my favorite daydream. I hated humanity even back then.)
See, this is why "evolutionary psychologists" are so totally full of crap. They're always telling us "Females are evolved to like cleaning and cooking!" Nice "science" there, Einstein. You've once again managed to confuse correlation for causation. It's not that we're "eveloved" to like this shit, it's that we're programmed from birth that we're supposed to like it and told OMG IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR WHITES WHITE MAKE A PERFECT BUNDT CAKE POP OUT BABY AFTER BABY AND THINK THEIR SHIT SMELLS LIKE PERFUME AND THEIR EVERY SPIT-UP IS A WORK OF ART YOU'RE NOT A REAL WOMAN!!1!

i don't really get why people find security in these
gender concepts
i even get shit from strangers on the street if my daughter is wearing blue.
Are you fucking serious?! The only proper response to that is a big ol' middle finger.
And of course, boys are just as inundated with stupid gender segregation in toys as well. My brothers liked playing with stuffed animals at least as much as they liked playing with toy trucks, and they turned out fine.
